Cyrus Jr. Knight, PhD, was born in Houston to an Iranian father and a Greek mother—both biomedical researchers who met during graduate studies in the United States. Raised in a home where Persian poetry mingled with ancient Greek philosophy, and where dinner table conversations often revolved around molecular pathways and the future of medicine, Cyrus grew up with a deep reverence for both the human body and the human spirit.
From an early age, he was captivated by the intersection of science and compassion. He completed his BSc in Molecular Biology at Rice University and an MSc in Cancer Pharmacology at Baylor College of Medicine, where he first witnessed the life-changing impact of translational oncology research. He went on to earn his PhD in Pharmacology and Cancer Therapeutics at the UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, followed by postdoctoral training in immuno-oncology and tumor microenvironment modulation at the Texas Medical Center.
Now a tenured professor at a leading research university, Professor Knight is internationally recognized for pioneering work in precision oncology, immune modulation, and AI-driven cancer therapeutics. His lectures are celebrated for blending scientific rigor with a humanistic ethos, rooted in the cultural values of empathy and intellectual curiosity instilled by his parents.
In 2021, alongside his partner, Dr. Sara Dilan—a clinical oncologist and advocate for patient-centered care—he co-founded Knight-Dilan Research Hospital on Galveston Island. The hospital serves as a model of equitable oncology care: delivering cutting-edge treatments, operating mobile screening units in underserved communities, and partnering with global foundations to make therapies accessible regardless of income.
Beyond the lab and clinic, Cyrus remains an active mentor, public speaker, and advocate for empathy-driven innovation in medicine. He often hikes Texas wildflower trails with Sara, films segments for the acclaimed series “Blooming Cancer Voices,” or speaks at international oncology symposia.
His pioneering research and unwavering belief that empathy is medicine’s most powerful tool continue to reshape the fight against cancer—one patient, one discovery, one blossom of hope at a time.
